The Wedding Party is the fourth essay in the Encounters with Jesus Series - based on several lectures given to students by Tim Keller at Oxford Town Hall, London, in 2012. In the previous three essays Keller has tackled some of the most important questions one can ever ask. In this essay Keller tackles the question: "What did Jesus come to do?" He answers this question by giving us an exposition of Jesus' first recorded miracle, or sign at a wedding feast in Cana as recorded in chapter two of the Gospel of John.The miracle of Jesus' turning water into wine was ultimately a symbol or a signifier of something greater to come. Keller masterfully gives three future signs that Jesus' miracle at the wedding banquet point to. There are three symbols or types in this wedding encounter that all ultimately point to our future with Christ. This story is a picture of how Jesus enjoyed the joy at the wedding feast by providing more wine, and yet how He became our substitute on the cross by receiving the cup of God's wrath that we deserve so that we can one day receive the coming joy provided by Him.

Keller is an excellent theologian. His writing is down to earth and easily read and can be applied to today!
Pretty much anything with Tim Keller's name on it is bound to be full of some fantastic and unique insight, and this is no exception. Keller offers his beautiful insight about the wedding at Cana where Christ performs his first miracle, or "sign," actually, as Keller points out the distinct difference between the two. It provides a lovely analysis of the event while also turning the tables upon the reader and offering some gut punching self-reflective questions about applying the truths of this particular event to your own walk. This one by Keller certainly won't disappoint.
Quick to read (one sitting), to the point and very thought provoking and powerful. Buy it. Worth the small investment of time and money.
Excellent book. For the serious student of the Bible learning never stops. I recommend this book for such like students to add to their spiritual library as I have.

is what Jesus gives us. he paid the price for our wretched selves, who are flawed and self-centered. He paid the price for us so that we can and should laugh.
I still don't fully get the bride metaphor because of the embedded sexual connotations. This could simply be my own limited Euclidian thinking but would have liked a more nuanced exposition that addresses that angle of using the bride metaphor...otherwise a solid and important contribution to the body of commentary on the message of the Gospel.
